MIDTERM: Tuesday February 8, 2005 - in class
FINAL EXAM: Monday March 21, 2005 @ 1:30 - 3:30 PM in Veihmeyer 212

Your final grade will be computed as follows: Midterm 50% of grade, Final 50% of grade.

Formula to do well in GEL/ESP 116:

  1. Attend lecture regularly.
  2. Go over your lecture notes on the same day as the lecture - Add thoughts and comments to clarify notes you took in lecture.
  3. Read the text, especially relevant to the lecture material. I will try to point out the most important sections in class. The text is provided as a study aid to assist you in learning the lecture material. You will find that versions of most of the illustrations used in class are in the text, so that you can go over them outside of lecture.
  4. Feel free to come see me or the teaching assistant during office hours if you start to get lost. Don’t wait until just before the midterm or final.
  5. The exams are multiple choice. They will test both your comprehension of the material and your understanding of terminology, facts and concepts. While you need to review your notes thoroughly for the exams, do more than just memorize - understand!
  6. The course grades are objective and based on a 500 point total. See below to determine how the grading system works.

* READ THIS:*

Makeup Examination Policy: There will be no makeup examinations unless you are sick and have a doctors note to prove it. Make sure you take note of this. I DO NOT GIVE MAKEUP EXAMS (nor Incompletes) for other reasons (e.g., I overslept and missed the exam or I accidentally made reservations to fly to the Caribbean over finals week not realizing when the exam was and I can't get a refund). The FINAL examination is at 1:30 PM - Don't miss the exams!

GEL/ESP 116 Grading Guarantee:
Midterm = 250 pts, Final = 250 pts
(Maximum Possible Points = 500)

 # Points Needed  Grade Range
  425 - 500  A- to A
  375 - 424  B- to B+
  275 - 374  C- to C+
  200 - 274  D
< 200  F

If everyone in the class gets > 425 points, than every student will get at least an A-. Although I may reduce the minimum number of points for a particular grade if the class average warrants it, I will not increase the points needed for a specific grade.
