May 22, 1960 - Great Chile Earthquake
the largest recorded earthquake: 9.5 magnitude
In the following days, a series of earthquakes ruptured a 621 mile section of the fault (that’s about the distance from San Francisco, CA to Portland, OR) and there was local flooding and landslides. Two days after the main shock, Puyehue volcano erupted.
The tsunami that followed the earthquake affected not only Chile, but also caused damage and casualties in Japan, Hawaii, California, New Zealand and Australia.
