January 9, 1857 - Fort Tejon Earthquake
The largest recorded earthquake to hit Southern California,
the Fort Tejon earthquake is estimated to have been magnitude 8.0.
Like the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake,
the Fort Tejon earthquake occurred along the San Andreas Fault.
The earthquake left a rupture scar over 225 miles in length along the fault.
