3 Silo ComplexStone Poem

Stone Poem. Granite sculpture by Steve Gillman. Originally exhibited in the Richard L. Nelson Gallery in 1986, the sculpture was in the artist’s Oakland studio, close to the Cypress Freeway, at the time of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Several of the stones were knocked over and broken as a result of the earthquake. These stones were reincorporated as “benches” when the sculpture was installed here at the Silo.

Outdoor Adventures. The earliest member of the horse “family” is Hyracotherium. Hyracotherium sandrae is the oldest known species of Hyracotherium, and it is also the smallest known species. It weighed only a couple of pounds and was roughly the size of a cat. Adventure KittyLet's stop by Outdoor Adventures and see (& pet) the cat who lives there for size reference. Hyracotherium sandrae was named in honor of UCD Geology’s very own Sandy Carlson, the team member who found the first bones at the Wyoming dig site.

Adventure Kitty! dons his handknit red scarf in anticipation of inclement weather. Please note: Adventure Kitty! is not to scale; Adventure Kitty! is also not real. Adventure Kitty! is just an incredibly good facsimile of a real cat; no animals or geologists were harmed during the making of this tour.
