What do you do?
I study processes in the Earth's interior that produce igneous (volcanic and plutonic) rocks.
Why should the general public be interested in what you do?
Igneous processes govern how and where volcanic eruptions occur, why ore deposits form where they do, and how the Earth's mantle, crust and atmosphere have changed through time.
Why does it interest you?
For the reasons listed above.
What major advances/discoveries have occurred in your research field over the last 10 years?
In the last decade igneous petrologists have developed important new tools that can relate the composition of igneous rocks to the thermal and chemical structure of the Earth's interior over the last 3.8 billion years.
