| The Geology Department at the University of California, Davis, maintains excellent research facilities for both field and laboratory research. The department is supported by an administrative and technical staff responsible for maintaining and operating the electron microprobe, the stable isotope mass spectrometers, drafting and illustrating, photography, computers and networking, and preparation of thin and polished sections. The department maintains teaching collections of rocks, fossils, and maps; campus libraries house outstanding research and teaching collections in geology, paleontology, geochemistry, and geophysics.
The department operates a variety of computer facilities, including computer-equipped classroom and research labs with Macintosh workstations, Sun workstations, GIS capability, a portable computer lab, and a variety of printers, scanners, digitizing tables, and associated equipment. The department operates the W. M. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences (KeckCAVES), and participates in the community Beowulf cluster operated by the Computational Science and Engineering Center. UC Davis is a member of NPACI which provides access to computational resources at national facilities.
Specialized equipment is available in various research laboratories: gas and solid-medium high pressure apparatus for experimental petrology and rock deformation, including a MA6/MA8 multianvil device for ultrahigh pressure phase equilibria and mineral synthesis, Fourier transform infrared In addition to our own in-house facilities, the department has access to a staffed machine shop and additional analytical facilities are available through the Molecular Structure Facility on campus. The Bodega Marine Laboratory (three hours west of Davis) is administered by the Davis campus and also provides extensive facilities for field research on marine systems. |
