![]() The Geology Department at the University of California, Davis, provides an outstanding environment for studies of the workings of the Earth and planetary processes as revealed by their composition, structure, and history. Our core areas of expertise encompass paleoenvironmental reconstruction, paleobiology, crust and mantle dynamics, applied and environmental geosciences, nonlinear geosciences, and geophysical fluid flow. Our programs include interdisciplinary research and teaching that bring the unique perspective of geology to scientific problems at many spatial and temporal scales. The Department has 24 full-time faculty members, 8 Research Scientists and Adjunct Faculty, and numerous associated faculty and researchers. Currently, the Department has 5 post docs and 47 graduate students; 77 undergraduate students are majoring in geology and an additional 15 undergraduates are majoring in the Natural Sciences. Degree Programs: The Geology Department offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts (A.B.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Master of Science (M.S.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Geology. In addition, we are home to the B.S. Degree in Natural Sciences and offer minors in Geology and Geophysics. We have reciprocal exchange agreements with several international universities, providing both undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to study abroad as part of their education. Research: Our faculty, researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students pursue field, laboratory, experimental, and modeling studies of geological and environmental problems around the world (please see Areas of Faculty Research). The department's excellent facilities and technical personnel support a range of methods including field studies, remote sensing, GPS, analytical geochemistry, petrography, high-pressure experiments, thermochemistry, geomagnetism, seismology, computation, and modeling. The department's ideal location also provides ready access to the many natural laboratories of California and the western United States. The Department of Geology is located in the Physics/Geology Building on the UC Davis Campus. Business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (PST), Monday through Friday; phone: (530) 752-0350; FAX: (530) 752-0951 Correspondence may be sent to:
